Maintenant is an annual journal that features the most significant contemporary dada writing and art from around the world. Inspired by the original Maintenant, an irreverent and risk-taking ‘zine published, edited and allegedly written by Arthur Cravan from 1913-1917, the Three Rooms Press editions aim to bring to light cutting-edge poetry and art that stems from this original spirit. Since 2005, Three Rooms Press’ Maintenant has developed an international reputation as a primary source for Dada work by well-known and emerging artists.

When a war ends provisionally, the agreement is called a ceasefire. But when peace ends, there is only war. War and peace are co-dependent. What might be best would be a “Peacefire.”
In Maintenant 17: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing and Art, 254 artists from 34 countries on 6 continents explore the concept of the end of both war and peace, providing provocative outsider ideas as dada has done since its inception. With searing cover art by Georgian artist Uta Kaxniashvili (“Child Under Bombs”), this issue of the renowned journal elaborates on Dada’s original premise as an antiwar movement.
The Maintenant series, established in 2008, explores themes of politics, humanity, philosophy, and current concerns from an antiwar, anarchic (and often eye-opening) perspective. Past issues include work by artists Mark Kostabi, Raymond Pettibon, Joel Hubaut, Heide Hatry, Avelino de Araujo, Pawel Kuczynski, Inas Al-Soqi, Giovanni Fontana, Nicole Eisenmann, Syporca Whandal, and Kazunori Murakami; past writers have included Gerard Malanga, Charles Plymell, Andrei Codrescu, Harry E. Northup, Malik Crumpler, Maw Shein Win, and more, with a strong contingent of artist-writers from the world of punk rock, including Thurston Moore, Mike Watt, Bibbe Hansen, and more.

These days you hear a lot about NET ZERO, in reference to steps being taken to combat climate change. NET ZERO refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. At this time, NET ZERO is an ambition lacking absolute definition as corporate energy titans pledge distant adherence without clear or immediate commitments to act. In fact, these so-called “innovative” scions of wealth seem to not even be able to remove the layer of hot air greenhouse gases spewing from the mouths of the pundits and politicos pushing the affirmation of their endlessly pernicious promises. Enter NYET ZERO. With NYET ZERO, MAINTENANT 16 makes an artistic power grab using DADA—in the form of original art, poetry, and writing aimed at exposing the hypocrisy of the engine-idle rich on recycled paper. We can change the now with art and thought. Otherwise, the future has NOTENTIAL.
For the first time since debuting in 2008, MAINTENANT 16 includes work from all seven continents on the planet, with more than 240 creators from 34 countries. The MAINTENANT series gathers the work of internationally-renowned contemporary Dada artists and writers. The new issue features cover art by legendary painter Chuck Connelley, recognized as a key figure among the New York-based Neo-expressionist painters – alongside artists such Julian Schnabel and Jean-Michel Basquiat – and collected by major institutions across the United States. Connelly has been portrayed in film by Martin Scorcese (Nick Nolte’s character in New York Stories (1989) was based on Connelly) and he was the subject of an HBO documentary in 2008. A prodigious painter with a passion for his art, he has amassed a vast collection of canvases, many of which have yet to be exhibited.

Dada was born as an artistic protest. An unfettered reclamation of the trenches flowing blood. Along came influenza which couldn’t choose sides. And now‚ here we sit in isolation—100 years later—still creating. Revolutionaries facing a new form of plague accompanied by demagogic projections.
Today’s war is for the survival of the planet. In Maintenant 14: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing and Art, the weapon of choice is Dada. Today, everyone in the world is affected by the growing impact of climate change, pollution, plastics, and lack of sustainability. The 2020 edition of the premiere journal of contemporary dada writing and art confronts the situation with a bold and rebellious collection of work that shows the absurdity of continuing the practices that have taken earth to the precipice of extinction. Using the theme “UN-SUSTAIN-A-BULL-SH*T” Maintenant 14 creators turn poetry and art into weapons that expose, confront, and lambast policies that have taken the planet to tipping points in the climate system, biodiversity loss, and the risk of social and ecological collapse. The premiere journal gathering the work of internationally-renowned contemporary Dada artists and writers, Maintenant 14 offers compelling proof that Dada continue to serve as a catalyst to creators more than a century later.
Each page in this journal is a physical conviction. Each spread relates an intimate correspondence. The entire volume is a familial tree of leaves and shapes and buds of thoughts to be.
Our theme might be UN-SUSTAIN-A-BULL-SH*T, but here as one soul, the moment is sustainable.
The annual MAINTENANT series, established in 2008, gathers work of contemporary Dada artists and writers from around the world. The new issue features cover art by neo-pop artist/provocateur Walter Robinson.

If you think artificial intelligence will mark the end of humanity, think again. Look at the world. Where is the intelligence? Lying is the norm. Incompetence is rampant. Information is soiled with whatever spin foots the bill. Time to concentrate on exposing the ignorance. And that is exactly what happens in Three Rooms Press’ new Dada journal, MAINTENANT 13: A JOURNAL OF CONTEMPORARY DADA WRITING AND ART (978-1-941110-79-9, 220 pages, Three Rooms Press, June 4, 2019; $19.95).
In MAINTENANT 13, the theme of “A.I.: ARTIFICIAL IGNORANCE” is dissected, dismantled, and reassembled in a madcap assemblage of more than 200 Dada artists and writers from 26 countries, bringing to life Dada founder Tristan Tzara’s dream of a global collection of Dada creations. This edition is highlighted by cover art from internationally-renowned painter and collagist Fred Tomaselli, and includes new work by U.S. artists Raymond Pettibon, Bob Branaman, and Heide Hatry; international intermedia artists Giovanni Fontana, Henrik Aeshna, and Susan Shup; as well as literary provocateurs Jack Hirschman, Charles Plymell, Iulia Militaru, and Andrei Codrescu. Other highly-regarded performance, visual, and literary artists include cutting-edge MIT Press art and architecture editor Roger Conover, Belgian graphic artist Renaat Ramon, Russian photographer and philosopher Irene Caesar, Los Angeles poet-actor S. A. Griffin, Bilbao-based performance artist Fausto Grossi, and many more.
MAINTENANT 13 taps into Dada’s capacity as a “final frontier” for rebel artists. The theme gives contributors the opportunity to expose, identify, retaliate, overcome, and react to the inherent anti-human under-pinnings of the profit-driven rush to give machines control of the world. Each creation is a protest against the algorithms that take away our humanity, privacy, and control of our own destinies—a manifesto emphatically asserting that individual life still has value, and will never be completely controlled or known, because imagination is human: it will forever remain out of the grasp of artificial anything.
The MAINTENANT series, established in 2008, gathers the work of renowned and emerging dada artists and writers from around the world. The series has been archived in leading international institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art–New York, the BelVUE Museum–Brussels, and more. Renowned contributors have included artists Mark Kostabi, Raymond Pettibon, Giovanni Fontana, Jean-Jacques Lebel, and Kazunori Murakami. Writers have included Allen Ginsberg, Gerard Malanga, Charles Plymell, Jerome Rothenberg, and more, with a strong contingent of punk musician-artist-writers including Grant Hart, Mike Watt, Exene Cervenka, Alice Bag, and Thurston Moore.

“Though people expect Dada to be silly, and sometimes it is here, it is also often political and usually poignant. . . It’s quite a smorgasbord for those who are sick and tired of it.”—Portland Book Review

The art movement known as “Dada” began in response to the horrors of World War I as a artistic rejection of logic, reason, and aesthetics of capitalist society. The movement has continued since 1915 in various disguises—Beat, Pop, Punk—and it continues today, as evidenced in Three Rooms Press’ ongoing MAINTENANT contemporary dada journal series.
The new issue, MAINTENANT 12: A JOURNAL OF CONTEMPORARY DADA WRITING AND ART (978-1941110652, 200 pages, Three Rooms Press, June 5, 2018, $19.95), features work that explores the theme “We Are All A ‘Like.'” With the rise in social media use—and abuse—the concept of “like” has reached whole new levels. There’s the idea of an individual’s reaction to events, people, images, etc. as a reduction to “Like” or “Dislike” without need for deeper consideration. Then there is the status factor: that something which is “Liked” by the largest number of people is of value. The concept, while simple, has innumerable ways of looking at it.
MAINTENANT 12 features provocative cover art by MacArthur Fellow artist Nicole Eisenman. Inside, the work of nearly 200 artists and writers from six continents storms the pages.

“A compilation of leading Dada-influenced artists from around the world. Spring of 2016 marked the 100th anniversary of the art movement known as Dada, with art, poetry, and performances created throughout the world in celebration. But with the changes to the political landscape that have taken place since then, the global situation that inspired the original Dada art and writing is becoming disturbingly more apparent with each passing day.
MAINTENANT 11: A JOURNAL OF CONTEMPORARY DADA WRITING AND ART (978-1941110539, 210 pages, Three Rooms Press, May 30, 2017, $18.95) offers a compilation of leading Dada-influenced artists from around the world. This year’s theme, “EYE FOR A LIE,” features work that examines the concept of “fake” everything—questioning the very essence of truth in what some have labeled the “post-truth” era. When individual beliefs, motivations, and emotions are increasingly guided by online echo-chambers, lies become truths across the entire political spectrum. From an artistic perspective this presents a unique challenge, and the work in MAINTENANT 11 shows artists unraveling lies, offering “alternative” lies, and often offering multiple perspectives of a single situation to show how reality has multiple levels of truth.
MAINTENANT 11 launches its quest with a custom cover by world-renowned artist Mark Kostabi, and, inside features new work by famed-U.S. artists Raymond Pettibon, Bob Branaman, and Heide Hatry; mail-art artists Vittore Baroni and Ruud Janssen; intermedia artitsts Giovanni Fontana, Henrik Aeshna, Luc Fierens, Rabyn Blake and Rosalie Gancie; punk rock legends Grant Hart, Mike Watt, and Alice Bag; poet and Zapp comix founder Charles Plymell; provocative outsider artists Claude Pélieu and Mary Beach; as well as literary provocateurs Anne Waldman, Iulia Militaru and Andrei Codrescu. Other highly-regarded performance, visual, and literary artists include MIT Press art and architectures editor Roger Conover, Belgian word-art master Philip Meersman, Russian photographer and philosopher Irene Caesar, Ukrainian avant-garde writer Yuriy Tarkawsky, Los Angeles poet and actor S. A. Griffin, Spain-based performance artist Fausto Grossi, French-American Fluxus master Patrice Lerochereuil, Hungarian artist, poet and performer József Bíró, Palestinian artist/activist Hamza Abu Ayash, and many more.

Dada is Everything! Featuring Dada poetry, dada mailart, dada collages and more! Tout est Dada!
Maintenant 7: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing & Art is the sixth edition of an annual collection of contemporary Dada work inspired by Dada instigator and Three Rooms Press spiritual advisor Arthur Cravan. Since 2008, the Three Rooms Press series has collected and published dada art, dada poetry, dada mail art, dada collages and more from around the world. This year’s issue, edited by Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges, features an essay about Marcel Duchamp’s seminal work Fresh Widow by New York gallery owner Francis Naumann, poetry by American writers Gerard Malanga, A. D. Winans, Roger Conover, Charles Plymell, Mike Watt, W.K. Rodríguez Pittí and many more. The original Dada movement peaked from 1916-1922, primarily involved visual arts, literature—poetry, art manifestoes, art theory—theatre, and graphic design, and concentrated its anti-war politics through a rejection of the prevailing standards in art through anti-art cultural works. Its purpose was to ridicule what its participants considered to be the meaninglessness of the modern world. In addition to being anti-war, dada was also anti-bourgeois and anarchist in nature.
