Author Lucy Jane Bledsoe Honored at High School Alma Mater 50 Years After Fighting for Equal Treatment in Sports
On Wednesday, March 15, NO STOPPING US NOW author Lucy Jane Bledsoe was honored by Ida B. Wells High School in Portland for her efforts 50 years ago to fight for a school-sponsored girls basketball team, in compliance with Title IX, the landmark legislation that requires equal treatment regardless of gender for any state-sponsored institution.
Lucy spoke today at an all-school assembly celebrating Women’s History Month and the 50th anniversary of Title IX. NO STOPPING US NOW is a fictional account of her efforts at the school. She spoke to the assembly in the same gym where the first-ever girls basketball team played.
The event was covered by local media, including KGW-TV8 (see interview here), KPTV (see interview here) and The Oregonian. Following the packed assembly, Lucy met with a smaller group of students to discuss more in-depth about how standing up for what you believe in, and speaking truth to power can make a difference in your community and the world.
NO STOPPING US NOW is a 2023 RISE Honoree, a finalist for the Golden Poppy Award, and was selected by Kirkus Reviews as one of “Nine Feminist Books That All Teen Readers Can Enjoy“. It is available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop, or directly from Three Rooms Press.
